Here is a link to Tricia's photos on Flickr, some really nice shots of the exhibition and some of the folks that came along.

'Spontaneous Communities' is an ambitious engagement programme for Norfolk & Norwich Festival. Five community groups will collaborate through the year with regional artists to research ideas, concerns and questions triggered by the Spontaneous City sculptures at NNF11, then they'll create new work for NNF12. Created by artists London Fieldworks and sited at Eaton Park, Waterloo Park and Cow Tower in Norwich, the sculptures draw on the ecology and biodiversity of their settings.

Hamlet Centre book beginnings
We started making some books today to accompany our work in the exhibition. First the group helped photograph each other in selected areas in and around the centre. These will be used to make collages in the next session. We then experimented with acrylics, stickers and tape onto acetate which will be layered over the top of our collages. There was a very calming atmosphere created by painting, its obviously something the group really enjoys and feels confident with. We had some wonderful results...see below!

The Hamlet Centre all up in the air
On our most recent trip to the Hamlet Centre we decided to send ourselves up into the sky, to get a birds eye view. We took it in turns to blow up helium balloons and see how high we could make it fly on string outside. We then printed out photographic portraits of the group and stuck them to the balloons so they could fly themselves. It was quite surreal at times! The last thing we did was write an invitation on a balloon to come to the spontaneous communities exhibition, we released this outside and watch it turn into a tiny spec.

Session three - Hamlet Centre

For session Three we decided to look more closely at the birds that might be inhabiting the spontaneous city and our toast sculpture, which unfortunately didn't survive the snow! We looked at and felt feathers and Georgies stuffed bird which she bought in. We thought about what the birds might be thinking when they see the sculptures and made speech bubbles with there thoughts in. Lucy had bought in her shadow puppet screen so we all had a play on that and then set about making our own bird shadow puppets.

Hamlet Centre - Toast Sculptures!
Session two at the Hamlet Centre was on Jan 31st. We started by looking over the photos of the sculpture that we had taken from the trip and used this as inspiration for our own Spontaneous City.
Armed with four toasters, a tin of pastry cutters and five loaves of bread we got going. First we cut lots of holes in the bread and then we got toasting. Once the bread was toasted we then pinned and cable tied them together to make little bird houses. The room smelled amazing and lots of people from around the centre kept popping in to see what the smell was. Once we had made lots of individual houses we then decided on a shape for the sculpture and then set about wiring these together. Outside the room we were in was the perfect tree, so we all went outside and wired the sculpture into the tree to make our own Spontaneous City. This sculpture is, as we speak, living in the tree. Everyday the group at the Hamlet Centre will have been taking photos of the sculpture to see how it has changed over the two weeks since our visit. I can't wait to see how it has evolved/decayed, especially in the snow.

Hamlet Centre - Session one
We have finally started at the Hamlet Centre, which is brilliant. We have had our first two sessions and all is going well. The first session was on January 17th and we went to visit the Spontaneous City at Cow Tower. This was a lovely trip, the sun was shining and despite it being a bit cold we all managed to walk down the hill to cow tower. The walk and trip gave us all space and time to get to know each other. Together we are a group of about 10. Before going down to cow tower we had made a periscope which we could use to get a different view of the sculpture. Everybody seemed to really like the sculpture and lots of conversation was generated around it.

Hamlet Centre
Me and georgie had our first visit to the Hamlet Centre on 13th September. Took a long while to arrange the meeting but we finally got there. We will not actually be starting the project until January due to the nature of the centre. Was lovely to have a first meeting though and give the staff an idea of our plans. Met a few really enthusiastic staff and they are now off to try and find other adults who attend the hamlet centre who would be interested in joiing the Fields of Practice group. Hopefully we will all get to meet in November.
